Miss
Elizabeth Harrison founded St.Scholastica's Retreat in 1862 from the
Estates of her brother Robert Harrison and his widow Charlotte Scholastica.
His Eminence Cardinal Wiseman blessed the foundation stone of the
original buildings on land in London Road, Clapton, purchased in 1859.
Originally, the Trust was set-up to provide accommodation
for Catholic men and women aged 60 years and upwards, in poor
and reduced circumstances and who were, or had been, in the ranks
of the Gentry, of the Professional or Wholesale classes and who
had at least 10 years consecutive residence in Great Britain.
In her lifetime, Miss Harrison interpreted the rules
generously, and with the guidance of the Charity Commission, the
present Board of Management continue to interpret liberally the
governing rules of the Trust Deed keeping the Founder's intentions
in mind.
Miss Harrison was mindful of the need for Residents to live in close
proximity to a Catholic Church. Hence the present Retreat is situated
within 5 minutes walking distance of St Teresa's Catholic Church.
